Matchday Recap - June 19

Second set of matches begin in group play and the separation begins. Some teams book their place in the knockout stage, others begin shopping for souvenirs to take home.

Match 29🇧🇷 Brazil vs 🇭🇹 Haiti (3-0)

Match synthesis:

Brazil arrived carrying five stars on their crest and a point to prove after being held by Morocco. Haiti arrived carrying the hopes of a nation that never lacks heart. For long stretches, the Caribbean side battled bravely, defended with discipline, and reminded everyone why football remains the world’s favorite underdog story. But Brazil eventually did what Brazil does. The samba rhythm quickened, the quality shone through, and three goals settled the contest in a 3-0 victory. Haiti’s supporters never stopped singing, while Brazil’s fans finally exhaled. For Foshe poolsters, it was one of those rare evenings when the obvious result actually happened.

Predictions:

72 of 72 poolsters called the Brazil win, and 19 had the score exactly right.

Match 30🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland vs 🇲🇦 Morocco (0-1)

Match synthesis:

Morocco’s remarkable World Cup journey in 2022 may have surprised the world, but by now nobody should be shocked when the Atlas Lions deliver on the big stage. Against Scotland, they produced another disciplined, efficient performance to claim a 1-0 victory and move into a strong position in Group C. The Scots, fresh from their win over Haiti, battled hard and brought their usual noise and energy. But while Scotland huffed and puffed, Morocco found the breakthrough that mattered. It was not a classic, but Morocco will not care. Three points travel well, especially in the World Cup.

Predictions:

47 of 72 poolsters called the Morocco win, and 9 had the score exactly right.

Match 31🇵🇾 Paraguay vs 🇹🇷 Türkiye (1-0)

Match synthesis:

Türkiye entered this World Cup as they so often do: everyone’s favorite dark horse. Unfortunately for their supporters, the horse once again wandered off the track. Needing a result after their opening defeat to Australia, Türkiye dominated possession for long stretches against Paraguay but discovered that football matches are settled by goals rather than hopeful discussions about xG. Paraguay remained disciplined, absorbed the pressure, and struck the decisive blow to claim a 1-0 victory that leaves them firmly in the hunt for qualification. For Türkiye, it was another chapter in a familiar story: plenty of promise, flashes of quality, and ultimately disappointment. Foshe poolsters who backed the Turks are fuming, some even going as far as suggesting Türkiye’s results be excluded from the pool.

Predictions:

11 of 72 poolsters called the Paraguay win, and 6 had the score exactly right.

Kudos to (🔥 = hot pick): Catherine H, Erica and Fred, Garold Hamilton, Jon Steitz, Mike H, Steven Whittingham

Match 32🇺🇸 United States vs 🇦🇺 Australia (2-0)

Match synthesis:

Australia arrived in this World Cup with confidence, having dispatched Türkiye and looking every bit the rugged tournament side they have so often been. The United States, meanwhile, came in buoyed by a convincing opening win over Paraguay and eager to show that home-field expectations would not become a burden. For 90 minutes, the Americans looked the sharper outfit. They pressed higher, moved the ball quicker, and carried far more threat in the final third. Australia battled gamely, as the Socceroos always do, but found clear chances hard to come by against an organized U.S. defense. The breakthrough eventually came, followed by another, as the hosts secured a deserved 2-0 victory that leaves them firmly in command of Group D. For the United States, it was another statement that perhaps this generation is ready to shoulder the weight of expectation rather than be crushed by it.

Predictions:

58 of 72 poolsters called the United States win, and 19 had the score exactly right.

Kudos to (🔥 = hot pick): Adrian C, Andrew Burke, Basil Waite, Chinwe U 🔥, Damien L, Edward Sharp, Erica and Fred 🔥, Kiran Dhupa, Mike H, Patrick Williams 🔥, Sarit Dhupa, Sebastian E, Shawn Banton 🔥, Sheldon L, Stephen P 🔥, Telroy M 🔥, Tom Hulme 🔥, Troy Timmons, Warren Graver
